25 Whom have I in heaven but you? I desire you more than anything on earth. 26 My health may fail, and my spirit may grow weak, but God remains the strength of my heart;  he is mine forever. - Psalm 73:25-26

This particular psalm was written by Asaph. Asaph was a Levite who was one of the three chief musicians appointed by King David to preside over the music and songs of the sanctuary (1 Chronicles 16:5). He was selected by the Levites to lead the music when David brought the ark up to Jerusalem (1 Chronicles 15:16-19). He was a gifted singer and an honored seer. He was a spiritually minded man who was gifted in praise and prophecy whose impact upon his own family lasted down for centuries.

In this psalm, you will notice it begins with the declaration of the goodness of God which is very common throughout the Book of Psalms.God is a good God. From the second verse to the twelfth verse, you’ll discover the psalmist confession of his frailty and weakness. Asaph questioned the troubles he was in. In his own admission, he mentioned that he was envious or jealous about the prosperity of the wicked people. He mentioned one by one the kind of life these wicked people were living. He wondered how these wicked people who live such wicked lives and yet prospering and seemingly didn’t have any troubles at all. They even mocked God by saying he was ignorant of what was happening.

Asaph tried his best to find the answer why the wicked prosper. Not until verse 17, where we find the answer the psalmist was looking for. He realized that God was not ignorant of what was happening. He concluded that God has the last laugh. He also realized how foolish and ignorant he was for thinking that God didn't care.

So, what principles can we learn from knowing the Lord is our strength?

  1. He HOLDS us when we are slipping away.

“For I am the LORD your God who takes hold of your right hand and says to you, Do not fear; I will help you.” - Isaiah 41:13

“He reached down from on high and took hold of me; he drew me out of deep waters.” - Psalm 18:16

  1. He ENCOURAGES us with His Word.

“As for God, his way is perfect: The Lord’s word is flawless; he shields all who take refuge in him.” - Psalm 18:30

“For the word of the Lord holds true, and we can trust everything he does. - Psalm 33:4

  1. He ACCEPTS our weakness and frailty.

28 Do you not know? Have you not heard? The Lord is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth. He will not grow tired or weary, and his understanding no one can fathom. 29 He gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak. 30 Even youths grow tired and weary, and young men stumble and fall; 31 but those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint. - Isaiah 40:28-31

“I love you, Lord, my strength. The Lord is my rock, my fortress and my deliverer; my God is my rock, in whom I take refuge, my shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold.” - Psalm 18:1-2

Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. - Matthew 11:28

“But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest upon me.” - 2 Corinthians 12:9

  1. He REFRESHES us with hope for the future.

“Surely there is a future, and your hope will not be cut off.” - Proverbs 23:18

“And now, O Lord, for what do I wait? My hope is in you.” - Psalm 39:7

“For you, O Lord, are my hope, my trust, O Lord, from my youth.” - Psalm 71:5

Set your mind on things above, not on things on the earth. For you died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God. When Christ, who is our life, appears, then you also will appear with Him in glory. - Colossians 3:2-4

  1. He TAKES us to our destiny.

God is not a man, that he should lie; neither the son of man, that he should repent: hath he said, and shall he not do it? or hath he spoken, and shall he not make it good? - Numbers 23:19

“The Lord will fulfill his purpose for me; your steadfast love, O Lord, endures forever. Do not forsake the work of your hands.” - Psalm 138:8

We need to remind ourselves that regardless of the situation we are in, we have a God who is in control. He is watching over us and he is constantly caring for us and providing our needs. So, in our times of weakness, he is the strength of our hearts.
