4 While a large crowd was gathering and people were coming to Jesus from town after town, he told this parable: 5 “A farmer went out to sow his seed. As he was scattering the seed, some fell along the path; it was trampled on, and the birds ate it up. 6 Some fell on rocky ground, and when it came up, the plants withered because they had no moisture. 7 Other seed fell among thorns, which grew up with it and choked the plants. 8 Still other seed fell on good soil. It came up and yielded a crop, a hundred times more than was sown.” When he said this, he called out, “Whoever has ears to hear, let them hear.” 9 His disciples asked him what this parable meant. 10 He said, “The knowledge of the secrets of the kingdom of God has been given to you, but to others I speak in parables, so that, “‘though seeing, they may not see; though hearing, they may not understand.’ 11 “This is the meaning of the parable: The seed is the word of God. 12 Those along the path are the ones who hear, and then the devil comes and takes away the word from their hearts, so that they may not believe and be saved. 13 Those on the rocky ground are the ones who receive the word with joy when they hear it, but they have no root. They believe for a while, but in the time of testing they fall away. 14 The seed that fell among thorns stands for those who hear, but as they go on their way they are choked by life’s worries, riches and pleasures, and they do not mature. 15 But the seed on good soil stands for those with a noble and good heart, who hear the word, retain it, and by persevering produce a crop. - Luke 8: 4-15
In this parable, Jesus teaches about the importance of having a receptive heart to receive the word of God. He explains how the seed (word of God) can fall on different types of soil, representing different hearts. Some seed falls on the wayside, representing those who hear the word and do not understand it, some falls on rocky ground representing those who receive the word with joy but later fall away, some falls among thorns representing those who hear the word but let worldly cares choke it, and some falls on good soil, representing those who hear the word and understand it, bearing fruit with perseverance.
This parable teaches us the importance of having a receptive heart to receive and understand the word of God and to bear fruit with perseverance. We all know that the Word of God is very important in our lives as a Christian. It is the Word of God that gives us the assurance of God’s promises for daily living. It is the Word of God that sustains us each day in the midst of our challenges and troubles in life.
“People can't see your root system, but God can. Praying and meditating on the Word of God will cause your roots to go down deep into His love.” - Warren Wiersbe
In order for us to have the Word of God rooted and grounded in our hearts we need to know at least these four truths.
The WORD of GOD is…
1.) Beneficial
But Jesus told him, “No! The Scriptures say,‘People do not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.’” - Matthew 4:4
The word of God is our daily bread. It provides nourishment to our spiritual life. It gives strength when we feel weak. It causes us to grow in our relationship with God. If we will not take in the Word of God into our lives, then we will not know God’s promises.
2.) Instructional
16 All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, 17 so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work. - 2 Timothy 3:16-17
The word of God informs us of God’s commandments. It tells us how we ought to live our lives that are pleasing to God. It shows us how to correct and rebuke those who are straying away and lead them in the right path.
3.) Transformational
29 Keep me from deceitful ways; be gracious to me and teach me your law. 30 I have chosen the way of faithfulness; I have set my heart on your laws. 31 I hold fast to your statutes, Lord; do not let me be put to shame. 32 I run in the path of your commands, for you have broadened my understanding. - Psalm 119:29-32
God’s Word changes us. It changes the way we think about life. It changes the way we behave and conduct ourselves before men. It transforms to be the men and women that God wants us to be.
“If your mind is filled with the Word of God, then it can't be filled with impure thoughts.” - David Jeremiah
4.) Directional
33 Teach me, Lord, the way of your decrees, that I may follow it to the end. 34 Give me understanding, so that I may keep your law and obey it with all my heart. 35 Direct me in the path of your commands, for there I find delight. - Psalm 119:33-35
It gives direction in our effort to do the will of God. It directs us to the right path when we are lost and can’t find our way back.
Let us keep in mind that we must continue to make sure our heart is always ready to receive the Word of God being cultivated by the Holy Spirit so that we may become fruitful and productive in our journey with God.
“There are four principles we need to maintain: First, read the Word of God. Second, consume the Word of God until it consumes you. Third, believe the Word of God. Fourth, act on the Word.” - Smith Wigglesworth
