“Therefore, as you received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in him, rooted and built up in him and established in the faith, just as you were taught, abounding in thanksgiving.”
Colossians 2:6-7
What would be God’s expectation on every person after committing his or her life to him? The Bible is clear that we, as Christians, must grow and get deeper in our relationship with him. We must learn to discipline ourselves in spiritual matters in order to become strong and firm in our faith. Having a deeper level of relationship with Christ will carry us through tough and challenging times we face in life.
Here are five steps to help us cultivate a deeper relationship with Christ:
Set Christ as the supreme priority.
37 “Anyone who loves their father or mother more than me is not worthy of me; anyone who loves their son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me. 38 Whoever does not take up their cross and follow me is not worthy of me. 39 Whoever finds their life will lose it, and whoever loses their life for my sake will find it. - Matthew 10:37-39
“When we put God first, all other things fall into their proper place or drop out of our lives. Our love of the Lord will govern the claims for our affection, the demands on our time, the interests we pursue, and the order of our priorities.” - Ezra T. Benson
“But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.” - Matthew 6:33
“When I put God first, God takes care of me and energizes me to do what really needs to be done.” - David Jeremiah
Submit under the guidance of the Holy Spirit everyday.
So I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh. 17 For the flesh desires what is contrary to the Spirit, and the Spirit what is contrary to the flesh. They are in conflict with each other, so that you are not to do whatever you want.
- Galatians 5:16-17
Seek God’s will to live a life of faith that is solid and firm.
“But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that comes to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him” - Hebrews 11:6
Study the Word of God on a regular basis.
1 Blessed is the one who does not walk in step with the wicked or stand in the way that sinners take or sit in the company of mockers, 2 but whose delight is in the law of the Lord, and who meditates on his law day and night. 3 That person is like a tree planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in season and whose leaf does not wither—whatever they do prospers. - Psalm 1:1-3
“But solid food is for the mature, who by constant use have trained themselves to distinguish good from evil.” - Hebrews 5:14
24 “Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. 25 The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock. 26 But everyone who hears these words of mine and does not put them into practice is like a foolish man who built his house on sand. 27 The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell with a great crash.” - Matthew 7:24-27
Spend time being thankful even in the midst of difficult situations.
“Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.”
- 1 Thessalonians 5:18
"Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God." - Philippians 4:6
15 "Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body you were called to peace. And be thankful." 17"And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him."
- Colossians 3:15, 17
As we walk with Christ, always remember the importance of cultivating a deeper relationship with him. Make it a daily habit to have a spiritual discipline to provide us the strength we need in life. Furthermore, cultivating a deeper relationship with Christ protects us from the enemy who is like a prowling roaring lion that is constantly seeking opportunities to destroy every child of God. We need to force ourselves to do what is necessary and vital to get deeper in our relation with Christ. As we seek to get deeper with Christ, we need to become proactive and intentional if we want to be the man or woman that God wants us to be.
